The water-soluble vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is found in small amounts in plant and animal foods. Cereal grains, beans, nuts and meat are the best sources of thiamine. As the body can only store very little thiamine, regular intake is essential.

Thiamine is a component of enzymes and plays a key role in controlling the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids.
