What is Jarrow Formulas, MK-7?
MK-7 is the abbreviation for menaquinone-7, a form of vitamin K2 that is considered the most active form of the vitamin . In contrast to MK-4, MK-7 can be detected in the blood for up to 72 hours [1].
Vitamin K2 MK-7 is obtained through the fermentation of soybeans by Bacillus subtilis subsp. natto and is also found in fermented foods such as sauerkraut .
What is vitamin K2?
Like vitamin K1 (phylloquinone),vitamin K2 (menaquinone) belongs to the vitamin K group, which combines a number of vitamin K forms . While vitamin K1 is mainly found in green leafy vegetables , vitamin K2is found in animal and fermented foods . K2 is also produced in small quantities by intestinal bacteria . However, it is assumed that these quantities are not sufficient to cover the daily requirement [2].
What effect does vitamin K have?
Two scientifically validated claims have been approved for vitamin K (Regulation (EU) 432/2012):
- Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting
- Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones[3]
These statements apply to both vitamin K1 and vitamin K2, but a clear main role can be assigned to both vitamins . Vitamin K1 plays more of a role in supporting normal blood clotting, while vitamin K2 is more responsible for bone mineralization .
Menaquinone MK-7 activates two important proteins in the body : osteocalcin and the matrix GLA protein. Both ensure that the calcium in the blood is transported to the bones and incorporated there.
