What is L-tyrosine?
L-tyrosine is one of the amino acids. It is not essential for the human body, as it can produce it itself from the essential amino acid L-phenylalanine. However, the prerequisite for this is that L-phenylalanine is present in sufficient quantities. In the metabolic disorder phenylketonuria, L-tyrosine cannot be formed from L-phenylalanine, which can lead to a tyrosine deficiency.
L-tyrosine is also a proteinogenic amino acid, which means that it is involved in the production of the body’s own proteins and other substances[1].
What is L-tyrosine good for?
The body’s own proteins and other substances include melanin, dopamine and adrenaline. L-tyrosine is also a component of the hormones produced in the thyroid gland : Thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).[2]
Where is L-tyrosine found?
As a proteinogenic amino acid, L-tyrosine is primarily found in protein-rich foods, both animal and plant-based. Good sources of L-tyrosine are:[3]
- Baker’s yeast
- peas
- soybeans
- peanuts
- Cooked ham
- Beef
- Pork
- Lamb
- Cheese
