When you buy lutein from Jarrow Formulas, you receive 60 soft capsules containing lutein combined with zeaxanthin. Each capsule contains 20mg lutein and 4mg zeaxanthin, obtained from marigold flower extract.
The capsules have a smooth surface, which makes them easy and pleasant to take . The product is also gluten and soy free.
What is lutein?
Lutein belongs to the group of fat-soluble plant pigments, also known as carotenoids . Lutein is also approved in the EU as food additive E161b and is used to color processed cheese, jams and vegetarian spreads[1].
Lutein is mainly found in green vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, peppers and peas, where its orange color is masked by the green leaf pigment chlorophyll . Other good sources of lutein are various types of fruit such as nectarines, peaches, apricots and oranges[1].
In the human body , lutein is found in the retina of the eye , specifically in the yellow spot (macula lutea), where it is present in high concentrations together with zeaxanthin [1].
What is zeaxanthin?
Zeaxanthin is also responsible for the yellow coloration of various foods , for example in corn kernels or egg yolk.[2]Like lutein , zeaxanthin also belongs to the carotenoid group and their properties are very similar.
