When you buy a tin of Now Foods CurcuBrain™, you receive 50 vegan curcumin capsules with particularly high bioavailability. One capsule contains a dosage of 400 mg Longvida® Optimized Curcumin Extract from the Curcuma longa rhizome with at least 20 % curcuminoids. The capsules are vegan, gluten-free and GMO-free.
What is turmeric?
Turmeric or curcuma with the botanical name Curcuma longa is also commonly known as “yellow ginger“, saffron root, turmeric or curcuma and is primarily used as a spice in Far Eastern dishes . Curcuma belongs to the ginger family and grows in the tropical regions of Asia.
What is curcumin?
Curcuma is primarily known for its high content of curcuminoids . Curcuminoids are fat-soluble secondary plant substances that are said to have positive properties. The four important curcuminoids in turmeric include: Curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin and cyclocurcumin. Curcumin is the most abundant of the curcuminoids at around 77% .
The coveted part of turmeric is the rhizome of the plant, which looks very similar to ginger. The root has an intense yellow color, which it owes to the curcumin it contains. Curcumin extract is obtained from the rhizome of Curcuma longa using solvent extraction, which contains many valuable ingredients.

As a rule, curcumin has a rather low bioavailability, which limits its biological activity in the body.
