What are omega-3 fatty acids and what effect do omega-3 fatty acids have?
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids and are essential for our body. Our body cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids itself, so they must be obtained from food. The most important omega-3 fatty acids include
- α-linolenic acid (ALA)
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
α-Linolenic acid (ALA) is a precursor and must first be converted into the active forms DHA and EPA.
With the intake of certain amounts, DHA takes on the following important functions in our body:
- DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function (min 250mg)
- DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision (min 250mg)
- DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels (min 2g)
Together with EPA, the two omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA have the following positive effect on our body with the intake of a certain amount:
- DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure (min 3g)
- DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels (min 2g)
- EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart (min 250mg)
What makes Now Foods Ultra Omega-3 so special?
One Now Foods Ultra Omega-3 softgel capsule contains 250 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 500 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
Now Foods Ultra Omega-3 comes in the form of enteric-coated, odor-controlled softgel capsules. Especially if you have problems with nausea or reflux from other fish oils, you should find it easier to tolerate taking these capsules.
The natural fish oil concentrate used is produced under strict quality control. It is always tested to ensure that it is free from potentially harmful levels of contaminants (i.e. mercury, heavy metals, PCB TM, dioxins and other contaminants).
In which foods do omega-3 fatty acids occur naturally?
As omega-3 fatty acids cannot be produced by our bodies, they must be obtained from food. Foods rich in omega-3 are
- oily sea fish
- herring, mackerel, salmon, tuna
- Linseed oil, rapeseed oil, walnut oil
- Chia seeds, linseed, walnuts
If there is an omega-3 deficiency, it may be useful to take omega-3 supplements in addition to your diet.
