What is 5-MTHF?
5-MTHF is the abbreviation for 5-methyltetrahydrofolateand is also known as methlyfolate. 5-MTHF is the predominant natural form of vitamin B9, also known as folic acid . The advantage of 5-MTHF over folic acid is that 5-MTHF is already biologically active . It does not have to be metabolized by the body first, but the body can make direct use of its effect[1,2].
Taking 5-MTHF is therefore particularly interesting if intestinal or liver function is impaired or the body is genetically unable to transport and metabolize folic acid[3].
